Further information
The Priest’s Stone is carved from local sandstone and would originally have stood upright in the ground. It is sculpted with a large cross of a very unusual style. Similar designs are only known in Northumbria and Wales where they are dated to the early medieval period. A second, smaller cross is carved on the bottom left of the stone but that may be much more recent.
There are all sorts of tales associated with this stone – none of which can be confirmed. Some say that it marks the grave of a significant Christian. Others that it marks a battle with the Vikings. Another suggestion is that the stone marks the site of a medieval chapel. It’s a mystery!
