The Lybster Stone
Clach Liaboist
A large boulder stone which has been inscribed with a simple double outline cross. It shows the influence of Christianity on the Pictish people of the far north, and is also linked with local superstitions.
The stone was re-located from a slope above Lybster Harbour at a holy well known as the “Well of the Brethren”. Why not visit the Harbour – enjoy the scenery and imagine people visiting the holy well, and the carved stone, in days gone by.
You can see the stone at the side of the church, under a flagstone shelter.
Further information
The cross symbol shows the influence of Christianity on the people of this northerly part of Scotland.
The stone has a natural indent shaped like a bowl and it has been suggested that the stone may have been used as a baptismal font. Small depressions on either side of the stone may have allowed the faithful to rest their elbows when kneeling in prayer.
