Further information
The stone may have been positioned for the view up the firth or to a prominent mound on the other side, and it may have been used as a focus for preaching the Christian faith. Like Clach Biorach at Edderton, it could be a re-used Bronze Age standing stone.
The stone’s name comes from St Devenic, an early Christian missionary whose fair was still being held locally in 1630. The parish church of Creich, built in 1790, was built on or near the site of an earlier church dedicated to him and mentioned in the early 13th century. St Devenic is said to have spent a considerable time in Caithness and may also have been linked with the Christian settlement at Dornoch.
Information panel located at entrance to Little Creich cemetery which is also the best place to park. To reach the stone, follow the path through the cemetery from the carpark, go through gate and walk to brown sign marker at layby end. The stone is located through gate and 100m across rough grazing land.
Please take great care when parking as the road is narrow and visibility is poor.
